The provincial government in North West has confirmed that the erection of the Zuma statue in Groot Marico will be abandoned.
“We are convinced that the PAIA application that AfriForum submitted to request certain information concerning the erection of the statue directly led to the decision to abandon the project,” says Hendrik Oosthuizen, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for North West.
Oosthuizen however says that the North West Provincial Government claims that the criticism and negative reaction of the community are not the reasons behind the abandonment of the erection of the statue.
AfriForum welcomes this decision and is still of the opinion that the R6 million for the Zuma statue can be employed in much better ways.
“If a decision is made to erect this statue in future, we will again put a stop to it,” concludes Oosthuizen.
