AfriForum today established a civil motion of no-confidence against President Jacob Zuma on the civil rights organisation’s website. This follows after the recent reshuffling of the cabinet and South Africa’s credit status downgrade to junk by Standard & Poor’s (S&P), the credit ratings agency.

This motion was set up in the form of an online petition that will be handed in with Baleka Mbete, Speaker of the National Assembly. AfriForum calls on the general public to support the motion of no-confidence. Ernst Roets, Deputy CEO of AfriForum, says the civil rights organisation aims to collect more than 100 000 votes.

Roets is of the opinion that this motion will give an opportunity to the general public to take part in a process to get rid of Zuma as State President. “We support the sentiment of various opposition parties that another motion of no-confidence must be initiated against the President again. However, that process will play out in parliament and be driven by political parties. At the same time, we are creating a platform for the public to also take part in a motion of no-confidence themselves by adding their names to a civil version thereof.”

“This is not a mere petition. It is necessary that the message be brought across that it is not just opposition parties with political aspirations that are of the opinion that Zuma is not fit to lead the government, but that this sentiment is shared by the civil society as well.”
