AfriForum attended a workshop about water quality management, held by the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS), during which the civil rights watchdog gave various inputs.
Chris Boshoff, AfriForum’s Project Coordinator for Environmental Affairs, says the purpose of the workshop was to find ways to improve South Africa’s water quality. This included comments and inputs from various interested parties such as AfriForum to ultimately establish an implementable strategy.
AfriForum pointed out the following:
- It is important that all employees are competent for their positions and possess the necessary qualifications.
- Partnerships and communication channels must be expanded and improved – not only between departments, but also with interested parties and the public.
- Operational plans, regulations and strategies must be executed better at ground level.
- Stronger action must be taken against institutions and individuals that pollute water.
“We are grateful for the DWS’s willingness to listen to our inputs and hope that it will now also be applied provincially and nationally on ground level. Through cooperation success can be accomplished,” says Boshoff.
“The sustainable management of water quality is very important and must be viewed in a very serious light. AfriForum as civil rights organisation will cooperate with the DWS and other institutions to ensure that water quality is brought to standard and that water wastage is limited,” says Marcus Pawson, AfriForum’s Head of Environmental Affairs.
