The meeting of the Council of Cities and Regions of Africa (CCRA) would be held from May 15 to 18 next year, Tshwane mayor Father Smangaliso Mkhatshwa said in Pretoria yesterday.
The organisation was formed last year after a need was identified for one united organisation of local government for the continent.
"We believe if we come together, we can build a better place to provide quality and better services to fight poverty and build relationships between towns, cities and regions in the continent," Mkhatshwa, who is the president of the CCRA, told reporters after a meeting of the body's executive committee.
The organisation would also contribute to peace and stability, he said.
Following its founding meeting, representatives of the CCRA would meet African Union Secretary-General Amara Essy next July to discuss the body's role in the African Union.
The organisation expressed optimism in a statement that "lasting democratic practices, good governance, stability and peace will be fully entrenched on the continent within a relatively short period". – Sapa.
