Afri can leaders are to meet on Wednesday next week in the Nigerian capital Abuja to discuss how their continent can get the most out of the upcoming G8 summit of rich countries, officials said.

Some 23 African heads of state and of government have been invited to attend a meeting under the auspices of the New Partnership for Africa's Development (Nepad), Nepad spokesperson Muhammad Kudu Abubakar said.

Nepadis a continent-wide development plan drawn up by African leaders in a bid to prove they are serious about cutting corruption, reforming their economies and promoting democracy.

The leaders of the G8 groups of the world's most industrialised countries agreed last year to increase development aid and debt relief in order to relieve poverty in Africa if the plan is seen to be working.

G8 will convene June 1-3 in Evian, France.

The May 28 summit will come one day before Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, one of Nepad's key backers, is inaugurated for his second term and many leaders are expected to stay on for the ceremony.

But one of Nepad's architects, Algeria's Abdelaziz Bouteflika, will not attend, officials in Algiers said, as he is expected to be dealing still with the aftermath of Wednesday's devastating earthquake in his country. – Sapa-AFP.
