The rest of Africa has much to learn from the South African election process, the visiting SADC parliamentary forum said on Thursday.

"We have observed nine elections throughout the Southern African Development Community since 1999 and realised how much other countries can learn from South Africa," said the leader of the observer mission, Veda Baloomoody.

The parliamentary forum, who in 2000 broke from its parent body by declaring the Zimbabwe elections "not free and fair", has 57 observers placed throughout the country.

General secretary Rasuku Mutukwa said a report would be compiled after the elections and distributed to all SADC members.

"We are monitoring the language of the elections, the press coverage and the interactions of the various parties," Mutukwa said - Sapa.
