Following the picket by security guards and cleaners outside of the July Council sitting, ActionSA has written to the Executive Mayor, Cllr Sivuyile Ngodwana, requesting that insourcing is urgently expedited in Ekurhuleni.

Subsequent to the protest Action by Security Guards and Cleaners, ActionSA met with the MMC for Corporate and Shared Services, Cllr Xakaza, last week to find common ground on the insourcing of security guards and cleaners as per Council resolutions, part of which were advanced by ActionSA. We are disappointed to report that the meeting yielded no positive results as the MMC failed to give timelines as well as how the ANC-EFF Administration plans to insource workers.

As such we have written to the Executive Mayor and City Manager on behalf of all Security Guards and Cleaners who are currently contracted by tenders to render services to the City. We will also be exploring how we can potentially look into involving the force and effect of the Office of the Public Protector or the Gauteng Legislature should no adequate attention be given to this important issue as it is a resolution of Council.

Despite the Council resolution on insourcing, the ANC-EFF administration continues to forge ahead with security tenders as opposed to the full insourcing of workers, which led to the controversial R2 billion security tender being approved within a month of the ANC/EFF coalition coming into power.

ActionSA maintains that the new security tender is an insult to the promises made to contracted workers and insists that all security, cleaning, gardening, catering and laundry service contract workers should be insourced.  As a party which values social justice, ActionSA believes that all employees deserve to be afforded the rights they deserve and be treated with respect.
