ActionSA notes with great concern the behaviour of eThekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda where he publicly snubbed the reality of eThekwini on social media, ignoring that the Municipality is facing a crisis following the Minister of Human Settlement’s confirmation that National Treasury has reduced the budget by R100m from the R1,278b allocated for the development of urban settlement within the City.

This comes after eThekwini spent only 6.59% of its 2021-2022 budget was set for maintaining aging infrastructure, and infrastructure damaged due to theft, vandalism and the April 2022 floods that devastated eThekwini.

Moreover, the lack of sewer pump-station infrastructure, property development is affected as many sewer pipelines have reached their capacity.

It is shocking that the Mayor continues to downplay the fact that the City is buckling under basic service delivery issues that include dilapidated infrastructure, mismanagement and underspending of allocated budget. Not to mention that the City still has not managed to afford the flood victims sustainable housing.

On behalf of the people of eThekwini, ActionSA will engage our legal team to explore legal recourse options to force the current administration to face up to the City’s woes and present a plausible plan to resolve service delivery issues and deal with internal corruption.
