Rev. KRJ Meshoe, MP and ACDP President today welcomed the appointment of Mr. Bheki Cele as new National Police Commissioner:
"The ACDP receives the appointment of Mr. Bheki Cele as National Police Commissioner, with reservations. According to media reports Mr. Cele has not been successful in rooting out police corruption in KwaZulu-Natal. The alleged corruption that included the destruction of case dockets was intended to manipulate crime statistics. These activities included; stockpiling, hiding, burning of dockets, ditching dockets of crimes on the increase, including child rape and reducing serious crimes to lesser charges.
Mr. Cele did not come to the defense of Constable Craig Josiah who was suspended for exposing fraudulent activities in the capturing of crime statistics. Constable Josiah had to approach the KZN high court in Pietermaritzburg to set aside his suspension. The voice of the former MEC for Safety and Community Liaison was not heard when Josiah deserved to be given credit for exposing corruption within police ranks. Because the newly appointed Commissioner had the opportunity to clamp down on corruption in KZN and he did not do it, the ACDP is wondering if he will not fail even more on a national level.
The ACDP does not have a reason to have confidence that the new commissioner will root out corruption among the police and eradicate crime in the country".
