"The ACDP calls on the Health Minister, Mr. Motswaledi to address the nation regarding increasing numbers of people being affected by the N1H1 virus commonly referred to as swine flu. This comes in the wake of reports that swine flu cases in South Africa have now reached 100. The ACDP calls on the Minister to detail measures put in place to ensure that public hospitals and clinics are on alert and prepared to handle patients, as cases increase.
The ACDP is concerned that no apparent efforts are being made to drive an awareness campaign to ensure the public understand the nature of the disease, what signs to look for and how to take practical steps to avoid catching the virus.
WHO recommendations:
· Symptoms are similar to the common cold or flu and can be treated in the same way
· People with chest condition, diabetes, or HIV may not recover as easily and are advised to see a doctor if the symptoms persist
· The virus is spread in droplets through speaking, sneezing or coughing
· People should stand at least a metre away from someone showing flu-like symptoms; avoid touching their nose or mouth, wash their hands with soap and water, reduce the time spent in a crowd setting, open widows in their living space and lead a healthy lifestyle.
