"It is very pleasing to see the smooth running of the docking and offloading of the first ship at our new port of Ngqura, now apparently regarded as the most modern harbour in Africa. The capacity of the terminal is impressive being able to accommodate new generation container vessels and those known as "Ultra-Mega" ships.
The ACDP is particularly pleased that the development will lead to increased employment in the Eastern Cape Province which has a very high unemployment rate and it will relieve the reliance on the motor industry.
The operation of the port is expected to have wide ramifications on all levels of the Eastern Cape economy and indeed, the nation as a whole for industries as wide as agriculture, fishing, construction, transport, storage, financial and business services, electricity and gas as well as wholesale and retail businesses.
We congratulate Transnet on their success in completing this, the first new South African harbour development in many years."
