"The ACDP is concerned by reports that both Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) and intended user-airlines see no reason for the building of a new airport in Durban when the original could be upgraded for far less. Especially considering that its construction will lead to increased airport taxes which will be levied on travellers.
The ACDP calls on the Airports Company to recoup their investment over a longer period than the envisioned 'once-off three-to five-year period'.
Reports say ACSA did not want to build the new airport and that it was forced on them by government.
We seriously question the wisdom of such a decision and call on government to account for their actions in this regard.
The ACDP calls for an inquiry and investigation into the motives for the building of the new airport which is costing over R8 billion. Secondly, to assess the most cost advantageous process for the consumer, regarding ACSA's strategy to recoup costs, and thirdly to interrogate plans for the future of the present Durban airport."
