The upcoming local government elections would see the Democratic Alliance (DA) engaged in the toughest election campaign it has ever fought before, its leader said on Sunday afternoon.

"For the next six months you will have to be strong. We are facing the toughest election campaign," said DA leader Helen Zille, addressing the party members in Lindelani outside Durban.

The DA would field its capable candidates in every ward throughout the country because the "no go areas" no longer existed, she said.

"The DA is getting stronger everyday and the African National Congress (ANC) is worried about the DA. Just a few weeks ago, ANC secretary- general Gwede Mantashe told delegates attending the NGC that they must be afraid of the DA," she said.

One of the reasons why the ANC was afraid of the DA was because the latter had the values of former President Nelson Mandela, said Zille.

"They (ANC) are afraid than before. They know we will win everywhere," she said.

Zille said that her party was winning wards in areas where there were no white people to prove that it was not a party for white people.

"This is the party for all the people. In an area eMkhondo where there are no white voters, the DA won during the by-election and this gave them (ANC) the fright," she said.

Zille warned DA members that the local government elections campaign would not be easy, saying that campaigners would be intimidated.

"They will lie that if people don't vote for them they won't get houses and social grants. You must tell them that we won the Western Cape and people still get grants and they now receive decent houses," she said. Zille accused the ANC led government of being corrupt, saying that people close to President Jacob Zuma and his relatives clinched deals worth billions.

"No jobs were created when those deals were awarded. The DA has a clear plan for the creation of jobs."
