With recent changes to energy regulations in South Africa, corporates can now generate up to 100 MW of power without the need for a generation license, and the regulations also allow for other relaxations in regard to wheeling of electricity that will facilitate the achievement of Net Zero objectives.  As corporates set Net Zero objectives, the external Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) pressures placed on corporates will play a role in how electrical power is generated and sourced.

Chris Green – Partner, Transactional Services

Chris is a corporate lawyer based in our Johannesburg office. He has significant experience advising on public and private M&A transactions (including structuring, negotiation and documenting those transactions), general corporate and commercial matters and regulatory matters (including interactions with the various Government departments and other administrative organs in respect of statutory proposals and amendments). Between January 2017 and February 2021, Chris led the establishment of a local office in Tanzania for a leading South African law firm.

Emma Dempster – Legal Director, Finance & Projects

Emma has experience, both for public and private sector, in infrastructure development, power projects, due diligence exercises, regulatory advice and opinions.  Her areas of speciality extend to energy law (including technologies of coal, wind, solar CSP, solar PV, landfill, biomass, gas, thermal energy, hydro, natural gas, LNG, nuclear, carbon capture, and other renewables), drafting/negotiating and bringing to execution agreements including power purchase agreements, EPC and O&M contracts, feedstock/ fuel supply, project development agreements, off take agreements and transmission and distribution connection and related agreements, regulatory issues, IPP procurement, advising on greenfield and brownfield project-financed power projects, regulatory framework governing the electricity sector. She has experience in multiple jurisdictions, including South Africa, Swaziland, Namibia, Botswana, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Ethiopia.
