Statement by Abigail Moyo, spokesperson of the trade union UASA:
UASA welcomes the positive news that the Department of Health may look into the easing of the alert level 3 lockdown restrictions for vaccinated people soon with the aim of giving “soft incentives” to the vaccinated while encouraging others to get the jab.
The declining number of Covid-19 infections has been attributed to people answering the call to be vaccinated.
Health Minister Joe Phaahla this week said he was encouraged by the decline in the third wave of Covid-19 in most provinces. During a media briefing in Johannesburg, he stated the number of active Covid-19 infections nationwide was at 145 026 at close of business on yesterday, 13.4% lower than a week earlier, while active infections had declined by 1 227 per day in the last 14 days.
UASA believes that as people continue to get inoculated the country will soon return to a semblance of normalcy. We take note and support the government’s encouragement of the nation to get the jab and we, as a trade union, urge our members and fellow South Africans to register and follow suit.
Inoculation against Covid-19 is for the greater good of the country and all in it. The more people get vaccinated, the sooner restrictions will be eased and business and economic sectors will start flourishing.
