Today, the MMC for Finance, Alderman Peter Sutton, presented the 2022/2023 City of Tshwane budget to be tabled, debated and voted on Thursday, 26 May 2022 during the ordinary Council meeting.

This is despite attempts by the EFF to derail and prevent Council from hearing the budget which would have dire consequences on the city’s ability to render services.

Although the task ahead seems insurmountable, the budget presented clearly outlines plans to improve service delivery in Tshwane.

The DA caucus welcomes this budget and its endeavours to advance service delivery and gear the city towards financial stability.

The city is tabling a total budget of R44,9 billion, of that, R42,1 billion will be the operating budget and R2,8 billion will go towards capital infrastructure projects.

The budget includes, amongst various others:

· R120 million to curb cable theft.

· R57 million for the installation of prepaid meters to improve debt collection.

· R3 billion to the city's various social relief programmes.

· R1.2 billion to be used to build, maintain and refurbish critical electricity and water infrastructure.

· R154 million has been allocated towards road maintenance.

· R98 million has been allocated for repairs and maintenance of streetlights to keep the city illuminated.

· And R198 million has been allocated to spark economic activity.

The implementation of this budget will ensure that the residents of Tshwane receive quality services, that the budget supports the poor and vulnerable and unlocks the city’s potential economic opportunities and bring investments.
