The Democratic Alliance (DA) is concerned about the ongoing failure of Tokologo Local Municipality to complete the construction of two pump stations in Dealesville. The Department of Water and Sanitation allocated R43.5 million for this project, aimed at eradicating 1,279 bucket toilets in the area. The municipality's inability to meet the deadline for this crucial sanitation initiative is a clear example of their mismanagement and disregard for the well-being of the community.

The provision of adequate sanitation is a fundamental requirement outlined in the White Paper on Water Supply and Sanitation Policy. It is disheartening to see that Tokologo has a backlog of 1,571 bucket toilets in formal dwellings, with additional households in Hertzogville lacking access to proper sanitation. The municipality's Draft IDP for 2023/24 highlights the urgent need to address this issue, yet progress remains slow and insufficient.

Despite the establishment of a site and the initial timeline, the project's completion has been repeatedly delayed. The progress stands at a mere 48%, with key construction activities still ongoing. The Department of Water and Sanitation has reported a lack of cooperation and commitment from the municipality, further exacerbating the situation.

The DA will hold the municipality accountable for their negligence and inefficiency. We will engage with the relevant authorities to expedite the completion of the project and ensure that the community of Dealesville finally receives the proper sanitation facilities they deserve. The ANC government's failure to deliver on this basic need, despite the availability of funds, highlights their inability to prioritize and effectively manage essential services.
