The City of Johannesburg wishes to correct the narrative which seek to suggest it is abandoning its plans to reduce the impact of load shedding for residents of Johannesburg.

Load shedding is having negative effects on the City of Johannesburg’s infrastructure, its residents and business in general.

The City of Johannesburg has begun formalising plans with key stakeholders to ensure that impact of load shedding is minimised for its residents. The plans entail opening up for new independent power producers, the use of energy mix, including solar and gas, to reduce the over-reliance on Eskom.

To that effect the City recently secured additional power supply capacity of 220MW from the privately-owned Kelvin Power Station that qualifies it for an exemption from at least stages 1 and 2 of loadshedding. Tomorrow the Executive of the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Mpho Moerane will be launching the City Energy Mix Plan.

The Acting City Manager of Johannesburg Mr Floyd Brink said, “As the City, while considerate of the national crisis in terms of electricity supply, we are pushing ahead with plans to have the City completely removed from Load shedding.”

Technical teams from the City, City Power and Eskom will be meeting today at 17h00 to iron out the plans on the table. The objective of these discussions is to forge a collaboration with Eskom to look for the best solution for all parties in this matter.

The choose dialogue with Eskom to find common ground for the benefit of the residents of the City of Johannesburg.
