About 600 delegates of the South African National Civic Organization in KwaZulu-Natal will attend the Provincial Conference scheduled for today 27 – 28 January 2023 at Coastlands Hotel, Durban’s South Beach.

Members of the media are invited to attend the Scene Setting Briefing at 10h00 and Opening Session at 14h00.

President Jacob Zuma, as a member in good standing is expected to attend.

The conference will also be attended by 100 delegates from associates and alliance partners – the South African Communist Party, Congress of South African Trade Union and the African National Congress as a the leader of the alliance.

Importantly, this conference will not only elect the new leadership but will strategize and sharpen a Programme of Action focusing on deepening our democracy.

SANCO KZN, as a civic movement, believes that all spheres of government must create a space for civil society and communities at large to form partnership with all arms of the state to ensure accountability, transparency and to assess the performance.

Delegates will also be discussing community based strategies aimed at dealing with  current challenges such as rampant loadshedding, water management crisis, unemployment, crime, rising fuel and food prices.

SANCO is worried that communities have not been properly addressed on what the government is doing to turn around the situation. We remain worried that there are workshops and dialogues that involved big business yet – communities, who brought about this democracy – who vote in large numbers – are left behind.

As we prepare for for the next National General Elections, delegates will also deliberate and reflect on the current conjuncture within the broader movement and how do we participate in the 2024 elections to strengthen the Alliance and defend the National Democratic Revolution.

Lastly, SANCO KZN will also spend time discussing programmes to strengthen the Alliance and to ensure unity. Delegates from branches are determined to emerge from this conference with a clear joint programme of action that will be presented to alliance partners for implementation.
