The South African Emergency Personnel’s Union (SAEPU) condemns the attack of Malmesbury Ambulance crew in Western Cape. On Sunday, 24 January 2021 at around 01:00 a crew from Malmesbury EMS Base went to attend a call at West Bank area when community members attacked them and stole Ambulance radio.
One personnel say two unknown armed men approached them while they were still busy treating the patient at the back of the Ambulance and shouted at them. The personnel took the Radio and tried to call police and control centre for help unfortunately one man slapped and told her to go back and continue to treat the patient. He then took the radio and left with it.
We are calling on community members to stop attacking personnel and stop disturbing them from doing their job. This inhumane behaviour will result in personnel refusing to take calls because they are not safe.
We also call on Western Cape health to fast track their plan of getting body cameras for EMS workers.
