The South African Communist Party (SACP) welcomes the decision of the High Court, Gauteng Division, striking off the roll a case brought against the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture by the NPO “Citizens for Integrity” over government’s position to withdraw support for Miss SA who is scheduled to partake in the upcoming Miss Universe hosted by apartheid Israel.

The Court accepted that the stance by the department on the non-support of Israel is based on the South African government policy and is the underlying matter for the issuing of the statement.

The SACP warns against possibilities of imperialist sponsored groupings seeking to convert our courts into transmission channels for opposition against legitimate government policies. Some individuals that frame themselves as the so-called "civil society organisations" or NGOs, claiming to be neutral and non-partisan, are in fact political fronts. They are extensions created to pursue a politics of opposition by legal and so-called "apolitical" means.

The SACP reiterates its position, that there can be no normal Miss Universe in an abnormal situation, in a Palestinian territory occupied by the apartheid Israel.

The SACP reiterates its solidarity with the people of Palestine against occupation of and apartheid oppression by Israel. It is foolhardy to argue that the so-called Miss Universe organised in an occupied Palestinian territory, with the Palestinian people suffering from oppression, expropriation, atrocities, and human rights violations unleashed by the apartheid Israeli regime, amounts to empowerment of women. The Palestinian women, and children, are among the worst oppressed population in the hands of the Israeli apartheid regime.

The working-class, democratic formations and individuals need to unite on a global basis in support of the liberation of the Palestinian people.
