Dr Geingob dedicated his life to fighting for Namibian independence, first from German colonialism, later from apartheid South African colonialism. After Namibian independence, he contributed to fighting to redress the legacy of colonialism which had for about a century long period racially subjugated the indigenous population while prioritising white settlers to exploit Namibian resources. At the time of Dr Geingob’s passing, the people of Namibia were in the process of demanding reparations for German genocide on the indigenous people of Namibia, particularly the Herero and Namaqua groups. The genocide was the massacre of approximately 50,000 to 65,000 Herero and 10,000 Nama between 1904 and 1907 by German military forces.

In paying tribute to His Excellency Dr Hage G. Geingob, the SACP calls for the unity of the African people to fight against imperialism and the legacy of colonialism.
