The Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) is set to invest more than R6.5 billion in road infrastructure to support the Tambo Springs Logistics Gateway Development to be constructed in the City of Ekurhuleni this year.

The Department of Roads and Transport plans to construct a road network linking the R2.5 billion Tambo Springs development directly to the N3 and other locations via a new link road and an interchange.

Construction of the Tambo Springs Intermodal Terminal, which is being implemented by Transnet along with Southern Palace Joint Venture Consortium is set to be a game changer for the economy of Gauteng.

“This Transnet-led Private, Public Partnership is a high impact investment initiative that will add one percent growth a year into the economy of our province.  This will translate to about 12 percent growth over a period of 15 years,” said Mamabolo.

Mamabolo added that the Freight Hub on its own would create around 81 000 jobs during construction and 110 000 jobs once it is operational.

“The R6.5 billion investment that the Gauteng Provincial Department, through our department will be investing in building connecting roads that support the Tambo Springs Freight hub is a vote of confidence in the project and the people of Ekurhuleni,” Mamabolo added.

The Tambo Springs Logistics Gateway will be built on the southern border of the Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni Metro’s and will support the cost effectiveness and price competitiveness of the goods that will pass through the hub. Once completed, the inland terminal will have easy access to major road and rail networks linking strategic sea ports, the OR Tambo International Airport and industries in the province.
