The Democratic Alliance (DA) is deeply concerned by the conduct displayed by certain members during the recent meeting of the Select Committee on Basic Education to discuss the Basic Education Laws Amendment (BELA) Bill. As representatives of the DA and advocates for transparent governance, we feel compelled to address the events that transpired and express our concerns regarding the disregard for due process and respectful discourse.

During the meeting, valid questions were raised regarding the gross irregularities observed during the public hearings on the BELA Bill, as outlined in letters submitted by the Northern Cape and Free State provinces. However, instead of engaging in constructive dialogue to address these concerns, members of the ANC displayed hostility and attempted to silence dissenting voices.

Despite the entitlement of elected representatives to ask questions and seek clarification, they were unfairly attacked and marginalised, which prevented them from further participating in the discussion. Furthermore, even after the Department of Basic Education (DBE) was dismissed from the platform, the chairperson failed to address these concerns or provide assurances that the issues raised in the letters would be properly investigated and addressed.

This blatant disregard for legitimate concerns and the issues raised by the provinces undermines the principles of democracy and transparency. It is essential that we uphold the highest standards of governance and ensure that all voices are heard and respected in our legislative processes.

Therefore, the DA has written to the Chairperson of the Select Committee, the Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) and the Chief Whip of the NCOP to bring this matter to their attention and request their support in addressing these concerns. See the letter here.

As representatives of the DA, it is our duty to uphold the principles of accountability, fairness, and open dialogue to maintain public trust and confidence in our democratic institutions.

Additionally, it is disappointing to witness the ANC's consistent disregard for public outcry and their inability to engage in proper discourse regarding legislation. This pattern of steamrolling legislation without regard for public opinion is detrimental to the democratic process and undermines the credibility of our legislative institutions.
