Women leaders across all spheres of government, national, provincial and local, as well as SOEs, will gather on 1 and 2 November in Somerset West at the Lord Charles Hotel. Pinpoint Stewards has created this non-political platform with one goal in mind – women leadership. Speakers, who honour their mandate to serve the public, hail from government ministries and other parliamentary, municipal and government entities.

Pinpoint Stewards co-founder Sudhira Sewsunker says, “Leaders are readers and unless they are aware of the statistics, real change can’t take place for more women to be elected in top positions within government. The conference aims to demonstrate that women at all levels in government can be mobilised, using their natural skills to lead.”

A new report released by Statistics South Africa titled 'Gender Series Volume IX: Women Empowerment, 2017–2022' shows that women in South Africa are more likely to be unemployed than men and are less likely to participate in the labour market than their male counterparts. The findings show that from 2004 to 2019, South Africa saw an increase in the proportion of seats held by women in Parliament, from 33% in 2004 to 46% in 2019. However, a regress was observed in premier positions from a peak of 55% in 2009, decreasing to 22% in 2014 and 2019 respectively.

Findings from local government showed that, nationally, males were more likely to hold mayoral positions than females (68% vs 32%). The North West was the only municipality that reached parity regarding mayoral positions. The Western Cape and Gauteng had the lowest representation of female mayors. Females constituted 40.9% of the municipal councillors in the country while the lowest representation of female councillors was observed in the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.

Despite some progress, more still needs to be done in order to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 5: Gender Equality by 2030. Read more: https://www.statssa.gov.za/?p=15833

The organisers have once again selected the Salvation Army and Survivor Exit Foundation as beneficiaries to the conference to support their efforts against human trafficking and sexual exploitation of women. A percentage of profits will be donated to each of these causes.
