Residents and commuters in the Central Business District (CBD) of Welkom are raising concerns over the poor road conditions and numerous potholes that have become a significant risk to road users. The Stateway service lanes are particularly affected, posing a threat to both pedestrians and motorists. Urgent action is needed. Please see pictures here, here, here and here.

Matjhabeng Local Municipality is responsible for ensuring that the roads within their jurisdiction are safe and free from hazards that may cause harm to the public. Despite numerous complaints and requests, the municipality has failed to repair and resurface the service lanes. This is unacceptable, and we urge the municipality to take immediate action to ensure the safety of all road users.

The poor road conditions and potholes have significant impacts on the public, particularly on Stateway, the main street of Welkom. The rough terrain of the service lanes poses a risk to all road users, especially during peak hours. It also damages vehicles, resulting in costly repairs that negatively impact the public's finances.

In addition to this, poor road conditions negatively affect small businesses operating in the CBD. The poor roads make it challenging for suppliers to deliver goods, customers to access businesses, and for businesses to transport goods to their customers, resulting in a loss of income and a decline in the economic activity in the area.

The DA calls on the municipality to prioritize the repair of the Stateway service lanes, ensuring that they are safe and free from hazards. The public and business sectors have a right to safe and well-maintained roads, and we expect the municipality to fulfil their obligations in this regard.

We also urge members of the public to report any road hazards or issues they encounter to the relevant authorities and their respective Ward Councillors. Together, we can work towards creating safer roads and a better city for all.

The DA is committed to resolving the issue by engaging with the respective stakeholders on an ongoing basis until a solution is found. We believe that safe and well-maintained roads are crucial to the development of our communities, and we will work tirelessly to ensure that the relevant authorities take action.
