Yesterday, the North West Provincial Legislature met to debate, amongst other matters, a motion tabled by the ANC to consider the performance of the ANC in government.

The ANC essentially tabled a motion of no confidence in itself.

What happened in the House yesterday with ANC factional mudslinging is exactly the reason why governance in North West has collapsed and much needed service delivery to the people have failed dismally.

Personal attacks and threats to expose corrupt behaviour by members of the ANC Caucus and the ANC Provincial Government dominated the debate. Health MEC Somadoda Sambatha accused ANC MPL Mmoloko Cwaile of abuse of his party political position by instructing officials to clean his private garden.

During the short period of the debate when the ANC MPLs were not hurling insults and personal attacks at each other, the governance failures of the ANC were raised – by ANC members themselves.

The ANC finally echoed the DA’s position that the ANC provincial government cannot govern and deliver services.

Premier Bushy Maape has been making empty promises since his inauguration, and before him, Job Mokgoro made the same promises. Before Mokgoro, there was Supra Mahumapelo. They all failed.

To date, Premier Maape has not signed a single performance agreement with any Member of his Executive Council. To date not a single Lifestyle audit has been conducted.

What we witnessed in the Legislature yesterday is all the evidence people need to convince them that the ANC is unfit to govern.

The people of North West sit without water, electricity, basic service delivery, poor roads, a collapsing health department and an unemployment rate of almost 50%, but the ANC chose to turn the Legislature into an ANC factional battle ground instead of a battle ground to improve the lives of every resident.

If the ANC want to fight their party-political battles, then they should schedule their elective provincial conference without any further delay and not abuse institutions of State and Democracy to do so.

The DA has tabled a motion of no confidence in the Executive four months ago, but Speaker Sussana Dantjie has delayed its scheduling. What happened in the Legislature today should motivate the Speaker to schedule the motion without delay, in the interests of the people of North West.
