Residents of Diepsloot continue to live in fear despite Premier Panyaza Lesufi’s promise to install CCTV cameras to help curb crime in the area.
This week, a protest broke out in Diepsloot because of the high crime rate. Some residents indicated that their safety is under threat because of the rampant crime.
Furthermore, residents are frustrated because the criminals are not arrested, the police do not have adequate resources, and there is no proper plan in place to deal with the current situation.
The recent crime statistics released for the first six months of the year indicate that at least one person is killed in Diepsloot every week. In addition, at least 66 cases of rape have been reported.
It is unacceptable that empty promises are made to our residents to gain votes in next year’s election. Our residents deserve a government that prioritises their safety and delivers on its core mandate rather than making empty promises.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng will continue to pressure the MEC for Community Safety and Security, Faith Mazibuko, to provide urgent interventions and solutions to address the rise in crime. The DA also demands that the MEC and the Premier give us clear timelines for when the CCTV cameras will be installed in Diepsloot.
