The Gauteng MEC for Education, Matome Chiloane, has yet again failed the learners of Relebogile Secondary School in Khutsong by not delivering on his commitment to ensure that the school is conducive to learning and teaching.
The department has not yet provided the school with additional ablution facilities, there are no sufficient water taps, and the paving has not been installed on the school grounds.
The learners were moved to a temporary facility after a sinkhole appeared in the school.
The schools are reopening for the third term, yet the learners and parents are unhappy because the department has failed to provide the necessary resources. This will result to further disruption of learning and teaching at this school.
1550 learners will share two water taps; there are no additional ablution facilities, and the school is full of dust. The current conditions of the school are not in line with the norms and standards of schooling.
Furthermore, the appointed contractor has used several delay tactics to complete the requested scope.
Relebogile Secondary School learners have already lost out on contact lesson time in the past two terms. The DA demands that MEC Chiloane investigate the cause of the delays and fast-track all possible solutions to ensure the environment is conducive for learning and teaching.
The DA will again request the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) investigate the department's failed commitments to ensure that learners rights to basic education and adequate learning are not violated.
