The IFP is alarmed by reports that the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals (SPCA) has started closing some of its branches, most notably in Mpumalanga, and that it is struggling to keep its doors open nationwide.

SPCA branches in Kloof and Highway, in KwaZulu Natal, are also struggling as are many others in communities where anti-cruelty interventions are most needed.

The SPCA does not receive any government funding and a recent decision by the National Lottery Fund to cut its support for the SPCA has left many vulnerable animals in danger.

The IFP has a long and proud history of supporting the rights of animals since 1975 and we are calling on all South Africans who have the means to do so to support the SPCA with monthly contributions to ensure their survival.

The SPCA also treats and vaccinates cattle, sheep and goats free of charge, which South Africans use for food security, to earn a living and for transport.

It is therefore clear that the survival of the SPCA is not only about protecting the rights of animals, but also has a direct impact on food security and the wellbeing and prosperity of our vulnerable communities.

The IFP calls on the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries to intervene urgently in reprioritising their budget to ensure support for the SPCA.

An IFP government in KwaZulu Natal post May 8 will ensure that the KwaZulu Natal Agriculture and Rural Development Department directs funding to the SPCA.

In the meantime, the IFP calls on the ANC in KwaZulu Natal to prove their commitment to supporting vulnerable communities by ensuring that the MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, urgently meets with the SPCA, to ensure that it receives the support it so urgently requires.
