The IFP echoes the stern warning and various concerns raised by Health Minister Zweli Mkhize yesterday, on the possibility of a second wave in our fight against Covid-19.

This comes as the daily rate of infections has significantly increased in many parts of the country over the past two weeks, and the number of deaths recorded have not yet stalled.

While the lockdown level 1 regulations have been somewhat beneficial economically, far too many South Africans have become complacent and are ignoring the dangers of Covid-19, as well as the necessary preventative measures required to protect themselves and others against the coronavirus.

We urge all South Africans to heed the call by the Health Minister, as the onus rests upon us all not to rest on our laurels. We must not forget that this deadly virus is still among us, and that the vaccine trials are only in the early stages of testing.

The IFP cautions government to carefully consider any further reopening and easing mechanisms, to avoid costing our country many dear lives.

We reiterate our call on South Africans to remain extremely cautious, vigilant, practice precautionary health measures, maintain social and physical distancing and to adhere to the lockdown regulations.

We commend all our frontline workers, who continue to sacrifice their lives as they selflessly care for those who are infected by the coronavirus in all our healthcare facilities.

During this time, Government must ensure the procurement of all personal protective equipment, an increase in hospital beds and quarantine sites, and that all emergency protocols are in place, should we find ourselves experiencing a second wave and deadly resurgence of Covid-19.
