The Joint Rules Committee of the two Houses of Parliament- National Assembly (NA) and National Council of Provinces (NCOP) - will meet on Tuesday at 12:00 to consider circumstances surrounding the physical removal of members from the Joint Sitting of 9 February 2023.

During the State of the Nation Address on 9 February, members of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) were directed to leave the Chamber after disregarding the authority of the presiding officer and causing serious disruption.
The situation escalated as the members refused to leave the Chamber and had to be physically removed.

The matter was subsequently referred to the Joint Rules Committee for consideration and report in terms of Joint Rule 14GA, which states that whenever a member has been physically removed from the chamber the circumstances of such removal must be referred by the Speaker or the Chairperson of the Council to a multiparty committee for consideration.

This meeting will be preceded by the NA Rules Committee, which will meet at 10:00 on Tuesday.
The NA is on leave this week while the NCOP Committees will receive briefings on departmental strategic plans and budget votes.
