The Gauteng Department of Health says it has put in place contingency plans to ensure water cuts do not affect health facilities.

Water utility Rand Water announced planned water interruptions starting today.

The water cuts are due to maintenance to infrastructure and are expected to last for 54 hours.

The Gauteng health department said despite no reported water interruptions at its facilities in the morning, it continued to monitor the situation.

The Department of Health has again fallen short of its target to vaccinate 500 000 people against Covid-19 over three days.

Government falls short of Vooma vaccination target during second weekend drive

The government held a second Vooma Vaccination Weekend from Friday to Sunday in an effort to ramp-up vaccinations in the country ahead of the festive season.

The drive saw vaccination sites open across the country, with the goal of ensuring 95% capacity on the Saturday.

The Sunday leg of the campaign focused on faith-based communities.

The low turnout also saw the country fall short of reaching the 24-million vaccination mark. As of Sunday, almost 24-million jabs had been administered.

The first Vooma Vaccination Weekend achieved 75% of its target of 500 000 vaccinations over the three-day period, with around 350 000 people vaccinated. This weekend's drive saw an even lower vaccine uptake, with around 260 000 people jabbed over the three days.

Big business says Eskom resignations would only ‘make a bad situation worse’

Business Leadership South Africa says it disagrees with those calling for the resignation of Eskom CEO André de Ruyter and his leadership team following the most recent intense period of load-shedding.

In a statement, BLSA noted that the State-owned utility had had ten CEOs in ten years, creating instability that “only served to make a bad situation worse”.

Likewise, the Minerals Council South Africa labelled the resignation calls as “unhelpful”.

“More than R6-billion was stolen from Eskom alone according to figures before the State capture commission,” BLSA said.
