EFF, Public Protector lose ConCourt bid to appeal interdict against Gordhan remedial action

The Constitutional Court has dismissed a leave to appeal application which the Economic Freedom Fighters and Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane lodged in a case involving Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan and the so-called SARS "rogue unit" report.

The EFF and Mkhwebane approached the apex court last year, seeking to appeal an order of the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria, which interdicted the Public Protector's remedial action against Gordhan while he took the report on review.

The Constitutional Court granted leave to appeal against the costs order the High Court gave against the EFF and Mkhwebane in her personal capacity, replacing it with an order for the Public Protector to pay the legal costs incurred by Gordhan, Oupa Magashula and Ivan Pillay in the High Court matter.

Human Rights Commission calls on Motshekga to reconsider reopening schools in June

The South African Human Rights Commission has urged Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga to reconsider the date for the return of Grade 7 and Grade 12 learners to school

SAHRC say many schools have not achieved the required readiness to receive learners.

The commission undertook independent monitoring of schools for readiness in all nine provinces, as well as consultations with various stakeholders, including teachers’ unions and school governing bodies.

The World Health Organisation urges caution as African countries ease lockdown regulations

The World Health Organisation has urged African countries to exercise caution as they slowly ease their lockdown regulations during the deadly coronavirus pandemic.

The WHO has also warned that if measures are relaxed too quickly, Covid-19 cases could rapidly increase.

WHO regional director for Africa Dr Matshidiso Moeti said analysis had found that the number of days for case numbers to double in a given country increased during the lockdown period in most of the countries in sub-Saharan Africa.
