Ramaphosa loses bid to overturn Phala Phala report in ConCourt

The Constitutional Court has unanimously dismissed President Cyril Ramaphosa’s efforts to overturn an independent panel’s findings that he may have violated the Constitution and committed money-laundering in connection with the ongoing Phala-Phala saga.

The apex court’s ruling means that the president will have to turn to the High Court if he wishes to challenge the report, which has been the basis of attacks on his leadership.

Presidency announces Mabuza’s resignation

Deputy President David Mabuza has resigned as a Member of Parliament, ending his term as Deputy President of the country.

The resignation follows his request to President Cyril Ramaphosa to step down from the position of Deputy President, which Ramaphosa announced in his reply during this year’s State of the Nation Address debate.

Ramaphosa expressed his gratitude and appreciation to Mabuza.

He said Mabuza’s contribution has been valued by the many constituencies with which he has engaged.

Ramaphosa will make an announcement in due course about the appointment of the new Deputy President.

ActionSA declares biggest quarterly donations

The Electoral Commission of South Africa noted that represented political parties continue to be beneficiaries of bigger donations, however, there are indications that unrepresented parties are actively raising funds and do receive some significant donations.

ActionSA declared donations bigger than donations received by some of the represented parties for the third quarter of the 2022/23 financial year.

A total of five political parties have declared donations amounting to more than R40-million, with ActionSA, the African National Congress, the Democratic Alliance and the Economic Freedom Fighters declaring donations‑in‑kind of more than R30-million.

ActionSA received donations of more than R4.6-million. The ANC disclosed a sum of R32-million. The DA received over R2.9-million. The EFF and the Patriotic Alliance each received over R200 000.
