The Democratic Alliance (DA) has closely monitored the ANC-led Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality water delivery amidst widespread outages and water quality concerns.

The DA acknowledges recent challenges surrounding water delivery in Mangaung, prompting concerns over transparency from the municipality. In response, the DA proactively undertook comprehensive testing for contamination with untreated sewage at three vital raw water sources along the Northern supply line of Bloemfontein—Rustfonteindam, Mockesdam, and Maselspoort (Modderrivier). Utilising a SANAS-approved testing laboratory, our tests reveal no unusual results above normal background levels in any of the three raw water sources.

Furthermore, residents in the Northern suburbs of Bloemfontein raised issues about the taste and odour of their tap water. A sample was diligently collected in Dan Pienaar for laboratory testing on Friday, 1 December 2023. Despite valid concerns regarding taste and odour, the water has been confirmed fit for human consumption and within prescribed limits.

The DA urges the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality to adopt regular communication practices, sharing outcomes of internal water quality tests with residents. Increased transparency will empower residents to confidently consume water. Additionally, we implore the Metro to conduct routine inspections across freshwater catchments, identifying potential pollution sources and enforcing Municipal by-laws. Residents are encouraged to promptly report any illegal contamination of freshwater rivers and dams to relevant authorities.

Taking a proactive stance, the DA commits to continuous monitoring of water delivery in Mangaung following recent outages affecting large parts of the Municipality, from Bloemfontein to Soutpan and Botshabelo. These outages, attributed to factors such as power failures, burst pipes, and outdated infrastructure, left various neighbourhoods and towns without water for days, and in some instances, weeks.

In response to residents' prolonged water outage grievances filed with the Human Rights Commission, the DA will collaborate with the local office of the Commission to ensure a thorough investigation addresses residents' concerns. Our commitment remains unwavering in championing the delivery of reliable, quality water for all Mangaung residents. Recognising water as a basic human right, it is also pivotal for the much-needed economic growth and job creation in Mangaung.
