The Democratic Alliance (DA) has taken decisive action in response to the grave corruption allegations against Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula. In line with our unwavering commitment to upholding the highest standards of accountability and transparency, we have officially lodged a complaint with the Joint Committee on Ethics and Members' Interests.

The Speaker of the National Assembly is entrusted with leading the legislative arm of the state. The fact that she faces these allegations threatens the credibility of Parliament and its ability to effectively hold the executive to account.

We cannot allow the trust deficit between South Africans and this institution to widen because of those who do not conduct themselves in accordance to the Code of Conduct.

The DA reaffirms its dedication to combatting corruption and ensuring that those entrusted with public office uphold the highest ethical standards. Corruption undermines the very foundations of our democracy and erodes public trust in our institutions. Therefore, it is imperative that any allegations of corruption are rigorously investigated and those responsible are held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.

We call upon the Joint Committee on Ethics and Members' Interests to conduct a swift, impartial, and comprehensive investigation into these allegations. The integrity of our parliamentary institutions and the trust of the South African people hang in the balance, making it crucial for this matter to be addressed with the utmost seriousness and urgency.

The DA will continue to closely monitor developments and advocate for transparency, accountability, and integrity in public office.

Issued by Siviwe Gwarube MP - Chief Whip of the Official Opposition
