Following pressure from the DA, we can today reveal that work will finally resume in earnest to complete the outstanding construction of Muyexe Police Station in Giyani. (See photos here and here)

The DA first exposed this ghost police station, which has been standing empty since 2015, during an oversight visit in October 2021. At the time, we revealed that more than half a decade later, the R20.5 million ghost police remains non-operational because the contractor, Mohlatlego Trading Enterprises, left the site without completing the project.

During our first oversight, we found a neglected site populated with rusty building material following the previous contractor’s abandonment to finish the “police station.” The ceiling in the building was crumbling. There were no water and electricity. The holding cells were now under debris.

Subsequent to the first oversight visit, we challenged Minister of Police, Bheki Cele, to intervene to ensure that this much needed police station is completed to boost rural safety in the Muyexe area.

We are now pleased that during our second oversight visit at the “police station” recently, work was underway to fix some of the structural defects that were caused by years of no maintenance, neglect and poor workmanship.

While the additional work will do doubt cost the taxpayer more, the resumption of work is a victory to the people of Muyexe who have been advocating for the completion of the police station for over 5 years.

This also shows the power of proper oversight by public representatives to hold government accountable for poor performance.

The DA will monitor the ongoing work to ensure that the people of Muyexe get the police station they have been waiting for, for years.

Issued by DA Political Head for Mopani Constituency, Solly Malatsi MP
