The African National Congress (ANC) National Working Committee (NWC) has welcomed the implementation of the party’s step-aside resolution at regional and provincial conferences, following a special National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting which resolved that any members facing any charges should not be allowed to stand for positions.

The party was looked into the matter even as two controversial leaders, who have matters before the courts, were already elected in KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga.

In eThekwini, Zandile Gumede was elected chairperson while Mandla Msibi was elected as provincial treasurer in Mpumalanga.

Outlining the outcomes of the NWC meeting held on Monday, the party requested charged members should not stand for positions in the party’s Branch Executive Committee, Regional Executive Committee, Provincial Executive Committee or the NEC.

RENEWAL AND UNITY

The NWC has also received a report on preparations for a special NEC retreat on unity, renewal and rebuilding of the party scheduled for June 11 to 13.

As part of the ANC’s renewal it sought to fully automate the party’s membership system to deter gatekeeping and membership manipulation.

The NWC said after the launch of the system, lessons were being learnt to improve it.

The party said members implicated in membership manipulation in Eastern Cape were facing disciplinary action.

LETSEMA CAMPAIGN

The NWC is pleased with the Letsema Campaign, relaunched in Mangaung by President Cyril Ramaphosa in April.

It aims to bring together government and communities, and ANC members and citizens to build better communities.

The campaign will begin in KwaZulu-Natal on May 21, with a special focus on the victims of the recent floods, to reinforce the relief and reconstruction efforts led by government and civil society.
