Following the General Elections, the ANC Provincial Executive Committee met on Saturday, 18 May 2019 in order to prepare for the next term of government.

The PEC received reports on the assessment of the election campaign, appreciating the fact that the ANC has retained Gauteng province. The PEC noted that Gauteng province has contributed the largest number of votes to the ANC’s national victory - 2.4 million votes or 24%.

We remain humbled by the mandate received from Gauteng citizens, fully cognisant of the fact that their patience is running out. Again, we thank the more than 27 000 volunteers who worked tirelessly towards attaining this electoral victory for the ANC.

After reviewing the work done by the 5th administration, the PEC has agreed that jobs, housing, crime, health, education and public transport remain key priorities for the 6th administration. We agreed that urgent inter-governmental steps need to be taken to address backlogs, especially in old townships.

The PEC unanimously agreed to tackle corruption, and to deal decisively with corrupt officials and politicians alike. This will need to be done if we are to deliver quality services, on time, and as expected by our citizens. The attitude of public servants will need to be addressed, and those not pulling their weight will have to be removed from the system. There has to be consequences for those not adhering to the Public Service Charter.

The PEC welcomed the decision of the NEC to appoint Cde David Makhura, the Provincial Chairperson, as the Premier Candidate of the ANC. The incoming ANC led Executive Council will be expected to serve with integrity, humility, competence and urgency. This is the expectation of the PEC.

Over the next month, detailed plans will be developed to give practical effect to the ANC Manifesto so that a new blueprint for “Growing Gauteng Together” is put before the people of Gauteng at the Inaugural State of the Province Address of the sixth ANC-led Gauteng provincial administration.

It is time for delivery, accountability and consequence management.
