AfriForum today laid a complaint with Lt. Gen. Khomotso Phahlane, acting National Police Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS), in which the civil rights organisation requests that Lt. Gen. Mmamonnye Ngobeni, KwaZulu-Natal’s Provincial Police Commissioner be dismissed and prosecuted.
This follows after an announcement that Ngobeni had been suspended by Lt. Gen. Phahlane and that another internal investigation into Ngobeni will be launched to establish whether or not she is fit to be the provincial police commissioner. Since 2011, Ngobeni has been linked with other police officers and business people to various cases of corruption and fraud, but she has never been prosecuted.
“It is good to see that Lt. Gen. Phahlane is acting against Lt. Gen. Ngobeni, but AfriForum is of the opinion that his actions are not strict enough. Ngobeni has been accused repeatedly of corruption and other crimes in the past five years – among other tender fraud of R60 million – and should be prosecuted criminally,” said Ian Cameron, AfriForum’s Head of Community Safety.
