Zuma admitted to hospital for medical observation

Former President Jacob Zuma

The Department of Correctional Services confirmed on Friday that imprisoned former President Jacob Zuma has been admitted to an outside hospital facility for “routine observation”.

Zuma is currently serving a 15-month sentence at the Estcourt Correctional Facility for defying a Constitutional Court order to appear at the State Capture Commission.

Department spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo said as a former President, Zuma would be seen to by the South African Military Health Services.

‘Everyone who is detained, including every sentenced prisoner, has the right to conditions of detention that are consistent with human dignity, including at least exercise and the provision, at the State expense, of adequate accommodation, nutrition, reading material and medical treatment,” Nxumalo reminded.
