Water woes in Letsemeng: DA demands urgent action

29th November 2023

Amidst a scorching heatwave, Letsemeng Local Municipality residents in Koffiefontein and surrounding areas find themselves enduring days without water. Despite three pumps, persistent issues plague the system, with only one functioning pump frequently malfunctioning, severely hampering the water supply.

Regrettably, the ANC-led municipality appears less than transparent in addressing the water crisis, deflecting blame to loadshedding while neglecting essential maintenance and lacking backup equipment for the pumps.

The water treatment plant project in Koffiefontein has ground to a halt due to the loss of the Municipal Infrastructure Grant to Eskom. As a result, the project may only resume in the upcoming financial year.

We express deep disappointment over the municipality's failure to communicate effectively with residents amidst this water crisis, denying them the opportunity to make necessary preparations.

The absence of clear communication exacerbates the impact of the water crisis on the community, leaving residents unprepared and vulnerable during this severe heatwave. Unless the municipality urgently addresses the water situation, the DA will escalate the matter to the Human Rights Commission. Additionally, we will conduct oversight of the water treatment plant to assess the extent of work needed to complete the project.

In line with our commitment to fostering positive change nationwide, we implore all residents to register to vote in the upcoming 2024 National and Provincial Government elections. We can collectively bring about the change our communities desperately need through voter participation.
