Unjustified Closure of Johannesburg City Library: A Call for Transparency and Accountability

23rd June 2023

The DA in Johannesburg takes issue with the unexpected closure of the Johannesburg City Library. This closure, which I confirmed during an urgent oversight visit as Shadow MMC for Community Development, comes at a critical time when students across various educational institutions are preparing for their mid-year examinations.

The library, a place that should be dynamic and for the betterment of our City, now stands essentially abandoned, its doors closed to the public. Inactive construction work on the site and scaffolding raise further questions about the management and future of this public resource.

The decision to close the library, taken by the ANC-EFF-PA coalition of corruption, is not only ill-timed but also deprives the citizens of Johannesburg of their constitutional right to access information. This is a stark reminder of the government's disregard for the educational needs and aspirations of our community.

The DA in Johannesburg is committed to ensuring the smooth operation of Johannesburg's libraries. These institutions are more than just buildings filled with books – they are hubs of learning, and skills, and hope.

I will urgently be writing a letter to the MMC for Community Development, seeking clear and concise answers about the reasons behind the library's closure. The citizens of Johannesburg deserve transparency and accountability from their government, and I am determined to ensure they receive it.

The DA in Johannesburg remains steadfast in our commitment to advocate for the rights of Johannesburg's citizens and will continue to hold the government accountable for its actions. Together, we can work towards a future where our public resources are managed effectively and our community's needs are prioritised.
