The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Cape Metro Region condemns in the strongest terms the clear ungovernability campaign taking place within the City of Cape Town.

Over the last few weeks, the City has faced extensive instances of public violence, illegal land invasions and destruction of public property. It is clear that this is part of an orchestrated ungovernability campaign by political interests and lobby groups.

The DA is a political party which champions the principles and core values of our constitutional democracy. The right to protest peacefully will always be upheld, but the reprehensible destruction to public property and public violence must be rejected.

I call on the Minister of Police and his department to ensure public order is maintained and that the City of Cape Town receive the fair and equitable support from the South African Police Service it deserves.

The DA-led City of Cape Town will continue to be a government in service of all residents based on good, clean governance.

I call on all residents to reject the efforts by a minority of individuals engaging in criminal activity to destroy our beautiful City. Together, we must continue to work hard to make progress possible.

The Democratic Alliance remains committed to building an inclusive, people-centred City, based on the rule of law.
