Towards Ethical Leadership in South Africa

18th February 2021

To turn the tide and get South Africa back to work, ActionSA has invited various leaders of faith-based organisations in our country to discuss the concept of ethical leadership as espoused by their respective faiths.

The four-part webinar series will give each faith the opportunity to unpack the character and qualities we, as a nation ought to begin to look for in those, we elect to hold public office.

There can be no denying that the past few years in our country’s history have been a demonstration of how wrong a country’s affairs can go when the citizenry grant political leaders a blank cheque to do as they please. Global and more so continental events have proven that unchecked political power can destroy nations.

South Africa is being held back by unethical leaders and unqualified public servants. State capture, the looting of public resources and the normalisation of public sector corruption have diverted funds away from efforts to address the legacy of our past.

Our current leadership crisis has manifested itself through rampant corruption, cronyism, nepotism, and illogical cadre deployment that have crippled our country’s public service. The systematic process of capturing the State has eroded state institutions and abandoned the once-revered concept and principle of Ubuntu. A principle on which the formation of our new nation at the beginning of our democratic project is based.

We must act as one to build a dynamic, efficient, and people-centred public service that put the interests of our people above narrow party-political ones. We must professionalise the public sector and end cadre deployment.

Public service posts should be filled based on a candidate’s merit, competence and by those who have demonstrated a commitment to ethical service in their professional careers. A necessary requirement if we are to build a more prosperous and inclusive South Africa.
