The DA in Theewaterskloof has, with growing concerns, noted media articles about alleged corruption by the Speaker of the Theewaterskloof Municipality, Councillor Derek Appel.

It is reported that the Speaker allegedly received a half a million-rand bribe to award a tender to a transport company.

A case has since been opened at the Grabouw Police Station and officers are investigating allegations of fraud.

It is inconceivable that any speaker, who is implicated in scandals such as these, can continue in his role. The Theewaterskloof council, as well as residents, have lost faith in his capacity to preside over council.

We make an urgent call on the ANC to enact their step-aside rule and to have Mr Appel stand aside with immediate effect.
