The Electoral Commission acknowledges the proclamation by Minister Nkosazana Dlamini–Zuma of 27 October 2021 as the date on which the Local Government Elections will be held. 

This announcement follows a legally sanctioned consultation process between the Commission and the Minister.

The proclamation has a number of implications for the Electoral Commission and the electoral programme. The immediate implication is that the voters’ roll for these elections closes at midnight on 3 August 2021.

The Electoral Commission will host a press briefing at 11:00 tomorrow, Wednesday 4 August 2021, to update South Africans on the implications of the proclamation of elections, as well as to provide a progress report on the envisaged court application.
