The ATM commiserates with victims of a brutal storm in KZN

The African Transformation Movement (ATM) has noted, with great concern, the reports of a brutal storm in Inanda, KwaZulu – Natal (KZN) that has resulted in significant loss of property and possibly life.

The ATM urges the KwaZulu – Natal Provincial Government in partnership with the Provincial Disaster Management Centre to respond promptly in assisting the affected in the area.

In the same light, the ATM urges all civil society movements to provide aid in the form of temporary shelter, food packs, clothes, heaters, blankets, and other essentials that may be of assistance to the affected.

The expropriation without compensation of neglected buildings that have been surrendered to illegal crimes and drug trafficking in the Durban area must be accelerated to provide sustainable shelter to the victims of this brutal storm.

The ever-slow response of the National and Provincial Governments in providing responsive aid to disaster-stricken communities is unacceptable. Municipalities that are prone to disasters must have an inbuilt capacity to respond rapidly to disasters, as compared to going on a tender process which further delays aid to the affected communities.

We send our heartfelt condolences to the families of the four (4) individuals that have passed on as a result of this storm, with the hope that the one (1) other missing individual will be found timeously.
