Steenhuisen requests meeting about intelligence report on recent unrest

DA leader John Steenhuisen

Democratic Alliance leader John Steenhuisen has requested a meeting with President Cyril Ramaphsa, leaders of opposition parties, State Security Minister Ayanda Dlodlo and Police Minister Bheki Cele regarding the intelligence report on the recent unrest that engulfed KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.

The unrest wreaked havoc in both provinces, leaving community members reeling after days of violence and looting, which caused rampant destruction and more than 200 deaths.

Steenhuisen said the meeting should clarify who knew what about the violence that was to come, when they knew and what they then did about it.

Dlodlo is on record as having said that she handed an intelligence report to law enforcement warning of possible unrest action days before it started, and Cele is on record denying that he ever had sight of such a report. Steenhuisen said this discrepancy needs to be cleared up.

He added that meeting will offer Dlodlo the opportunity to set out the timeline of events leading up to the violence and looting, as well as the details of the reports and briefings that were given to NATJOINTS.

Steenhuisen added that it will also offer Cele the opportunity to explain how much information he was privy to, and why it took Crime Intelligence and the South African Police Service so long to react.

He said if a credible intelligence report was ignored or concealed, those responsible must face the consequences.
